The song I chose for this week is "What'd I Say" by Ray Charles (linked below). The song was released in 1959 and has two parts to it for a total length of about 5 minutes. Some of the instruments used in the song include the electric piano, saxophone and the drums. Ray Charles also worked with a girl group called The Raelettes (originally known as The Cookies before working for Charles) who sang the backing vocals for this, and some of his other pieces.
"What'd I Say" starts off with a pretty long instrumental intro that has some fun piano parts in it. I think the breaks for the instruments are one of my favorite parts. It stays pretty relaxed and repetitive, but upbeat. The lyrics in the song are also relatively repetitive and sung in short lines between instrument breaks. There's a lot of heavily repeated lines in the song, but a few of them are : "Tell m what'd I say", "And I wanna know" and "Said one more time". The lines like these are often echoed back and forth between Ray Charles and The Raelettes later in the song.

This song is actually really fun compared to others on the list we have this week! Its very upbeat andd happy! I also really loved the instruments playing within this song, especially the electric piano I thought it made it sound so fun! The way the instruments and the singer take turns almost throughtout the song, like you said, make it very different but entertaining to listen to.
ReplyDeleteI don't know about anyone else but this is a fun song to listen to. I love the long musical intro. the lyrics are very repetitive. But that seems to be a standard for most types of dance music, it also has a false ending with a strange into to the last outro. This happens quite a few times the last 2 minuets of the song. It also adds some female accompanists
