The song I chose for this week is "Good Vibrations" by The Beach Boys, released in 1966. I remember my parent's listening to some of their songs when I was younger like "Surfin' USA", "I Get Around" and a few others so their singing is a pretty nostalgic sound. The original 5 member's of the beach boy's included Brain Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Carl Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardin. "Good Vibrations" was written specifically by Brian Wilson and Mike Love and some articles I read said Brian worked especially hard on the lyrics and sounds for the song.
"Good Vibrations" has a pretty unique sound to it paired with positive lyrics. Some of the prominent instruments in the song are the string bass, cello, jaw harp, an electro-theremin (which is that weird instrument that uses antennae to create sounds from moving your hands around in the air) and some others, all used to make the interesting sounds. The song is relatively slow but picks up or slows down a bit on occasion. It has different sounding sections throughout the three and a half minutes and it's kind of interesting how some parts of the song contrast.

I also have a lot of memories attached to this song as well. I remember when I was young I discovered The Beatles and very shortly after that I was introduced to the Beach Boys and I enjoyed them for similar reasons. This song is one of my all time favorites of theirs.
ReplyDeleteThough I don't listen to The Beach Boys often, but I really do love and appreciate all the different sounds they add into many of their songs. The song, "Good Vibrations" is really fun to listen too because they have so many textures within the song making it sometimes like a mash of separate songs.
