Blog Post #2
For this week I listened to "I Got Rhythm" by George and Ira Gershwin. One of the versions I listened to was sung by Ethel Merman (linked below). The song was composed by George for a musical called Girl Crazy. Since "I Got Rhythm" was written specifically for a musical, the goal was probably to make the audience feel a certain way during the piece. The song starts a little slower in the full version from the musical that was sung by Judy Garland (linked below). After opening, the song is upbeat and repeats a catchy rhythm a couple times through out the song.
The lyrics of the song talk about having a list of things and not needing to ask for anything else. The chorus repeats "I got rhythm, I got music, I got my man, who could ask for anything more?" and lists other things like having 'sweet dreams' and 'daisy's'. Overall the song's goal seems to be to make the audience of the musical feel happy during the scene it was played with. Both versions also had what sounded like trumpets or a band playing in the background to complement the singer.
